Calder Trophy Goes to Jonathan Huberdeau

Calder Trophy Goes to Jonathan Huberdeau

The Calder Trophy, given to the NHL Rookie of the Year, resides in South Florida. The Florida Panthers left wing Jonathan Huberdeau. Huberdeau had 14 goals and 17 assists in the abbreviated 48 games season for the Panthers.

Huberdeau is the first member of the Panthers to win a major NHL Award. He beat out fellow finalists Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens and Brandon Saad of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

On one of the worst teams in the NHL, Huberdeau was routinely on the ice with the top lines in each game. He came through with flying colors.

The Panthers selected Huberdeau with the third pick in the NHL Draft last season. This year they have the second pick in the draft. If they can do as well with that pick as they did with last year’s their fortunes could turn around quickly.

For those of you who follow the NBA, you may remember “Popeye” Jones from a few years back. Why is this important? Because his son Seth is projected to be one of the top two picks in the NHL Draft. The other consensus top two pick is Nathan McKinnon.

With the Colorado Avalanche holding the top pick, it would be very hard for them to pass on Jones. After all, they taught the kid how to play hockey while his dad played for the Denver Nuggets. This might mean the Panthers land McKinnon who most think is the real #1 pick in this draft.

So Panthers fans have reason to be very optimistic for a future with at least one Calder Trophy winner in Huberdeau and possibly another one with either McKinnon or Jones. This has to be the best time to be a Panthers fan since the mid 1990s when they lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Avs.

Maybe Huberdeau and the Panthers can get us a rematch in the near future?
